VENEZUELA: Dispersal of opposition may yet be reversed

On paper, the attempt by parts of the opposition to coalesce behind a singe candidate have failed miserably: no fewer than 27 candidates have registered to compete with President Hugo Chávez . Though the government denies this, there are strong suspicions that this proliferation of candidacies is a government ploy to disperse the opposition vote as much as possible. But signs are emerging that more of the established opposition groups, including current abstentionists, may swing over to support former Zulia governor Manuel Rosales.
